Norfolk Through a Lens – Exhibition and Book

So I’m on the road again. And surprise, surprise (not) I’m back in the Bosnia and Hercegovina to work on my ongoing traditional food project.

But before I get into that I want to let you know about an important upcoming project and event. Namely the Norfolk Through A Lens book project! This book is a labor of love for all of us involved but it’s existence is directly the result of fellow Norfolk resident Anita Holmes. She had the very ambitious idea to bring together the work of ten Norfolk photographers into a single volume. More than a location/travel book or art piece, this is really a physical manifestation of place. It’s the first book of photography about town that has been published in nearly 100 years. (And the truth is it really transcends our fair hamlet.) Anyway, head over to Norfolk Through A Lens to preorder your copy.

The book is currently at the printers and should be available in early November.

Also we will be having a group exhibition of work from the book at the Norfolk Library in October. The opening is Sunday, October 2 from 4-6 pm. I won’t be in attendance for obvious reasons, but my work will. (If you stop by be sure to let me know that you went!)

Now then…back to the Balkans…

As you may (or may not) know I have been working on a long-term documentary project in the former Yugoslavia, photographing and interviewing the traditional cheese producers (more specifically the cheese makers, shepherds, beekeepers, olive growers and pressers, etc.)

In the past I have tried to blog about this place and let’s be honest, failed miserably. If I’m here I want to be here, paying attention, listening, looking, seeing. Not processing, thinking, mulling over and trying to distill what I’m seeing.

So instead I’m going to try something different, something a bit more topical. Both about what I am seeing and what I am thinking – which may or may not be directly related to what’s happening.

In the next couple of days I will share with you my visit to the to the nearly 4000 year old salt works (and nearby oyster beds) of the Peljasać Peninsula. (Which is just north of Dubrovnik, Croatia.) After that, we’ll see. As it is, I have lots to share and hardly know where to start. So, I’m doing what seems to be the best thing and just starting where I am.

Hope you enjoy!
